Questions buyers ask

What does the FB3 actually do?

The FB3 is the controller (the DAC) between your computer and your laser. It takes the QuickShow output over USB and turns it into the analog signal the ILDA port on almost every laser needs. It also activates QuickShow or Beyond and stores that license on the unit, so it works like a dongle.

Do I need one FB3 for every laser?

You need one FB3 or FB4 for every laser you want to control on its own. ILDA can't carry separate signals down a daisy chain, so any laser chained off another gets the exact same input: same zones, same programming. Chaining is fine for lasers that mirror each other, but not for independent looks.

Should I buy the FB3 or a laser with an FB4 built in?

If you're buying a laser, I tell buyers to get one with an FB4 built in. You need a controller per laser anyway, it costs only marginally more than a laser plus an FB3, and I'd estimate 90%+ of lasers worldwide now ship with the controller inside. Ethernet cables are easy to find in a pinch, ILDA cables are a pain to manage, and most rentals, shows and venues request or require FB4. The FB3 at $590 makes sense when you want the cheapest way in or you want to carry your license between rigs.

Can I take my QuickShow or Beyond license to other rigs?

Yes, the license lives on the FB3, so it goes wherever the unit goes. I carry my FB3 around the world because it holds my Beyond Ultimate license. I work on a lot of different rigs, and even after advancing a show I sometimes walk into an 8-laser rig running QuickShow. With the FB3 in my bag I always have my preferred software.

What do new FB3 owners get stuck on?

Zoning and projector settings. Drivers are simple, and you can get a laser running right away without any class. If you want help, I run a 1-hour class for quick questions and setup walkthroughs, and a 2-hour class for deeper learning on design and touring workflow. I've taught complete beginners and people who have toured for years.
